Moving time…

Sigh, it was a long Saturday. I helped move my Fiancee out of her parents’ house to an apartment. It had to be a hot day of course as are most days(and nights) in Houston, Texas. She is mostly moved in and I got her cable Internet connection going about 30 minutes before typing this. Tomorrow I have to get to Plantersville and help out someone from over there with their computers and network. It should be a good day. Anyway, time for me to get off the computer for the evening…or morning; whichever it is. Later ya’ll.

Work can be fun…

Well, so far at First Community Bank I have been keeping busy. I have had to go back to Community State Bank once this week as some problems cropped up. FCB has been wearing me out which is a good thing. I have learned a few new things which are useful. Well, time to jet…lates…

CSB to FCB and back again…

If I remember correctly in one of my earlier posts I mentioned that Community State Bank was being acquired by First Community Bank. Well, I was informed yesterday that I will have a job even after it all goes through in January. I talked to the HR department it is all good. I still have the long drive but the fact that I still have a job is a good thing. heh… Anyway, it will be fun to have more hardware and software to take care of. In fact that is one of the reasons I signed onto being in the IT Industry. Getting things to work and tinkering is and hopefully will always be fun for me. This coming Monday I start working over at FCB. I am still on call for CSB of course as to leave them out in the cold would be a bad thing and would just be rather rude. All I can say is that it will be an experience.

Seeker’s Peektures yet again…

Jessica wanted to be notified every time someone left a comment. It took me a little while to find the hack for it as I was unable to find a legit way to get it working. Below is the code that needed to be inserted into the add_comment.php file. It had to be added right after dismissAndReload(); in the aforementioned file.

mail(“your@email.address.com”, “Gallery comment added by”,
$commenter_name .
“\n\nComment:\n\n” .
$comment_text . “\n\n\n” .
$IPNumber .
“\n\nIndex:” . $index,
“From: $commenter_name”);

Of course the email address had to be changed but you get the idea.

Seeker’s Peektures

I have created another gallery site. It is not for me of course but for my Niece, Jessica.
Here is the link: http://seeker.smock.com/
It is on my smock.com domain until we get theuncle.com moved over to a host that allows Gallery. She has of course taken full advantage of the gallery and has loads of pictures on it now. She even said “…alot more to come” when I referred to the amount of pics. Gotta go…

Marriage…

Well, according to my calculations it is a little over three months until I get married. I would say that it is a weird thing about me getting married but my woman might be reading…err, whoops…heh. Anyway, I cannot wait until it is all said and done. I am not meaning that in a bad way of course, it is just that it is a stressful time right now. Lates…

USB Hard Drives…

Well, I have had a USB 2.0 drive enclosure case for a while. I finally felt like using it more and more. It is holding up under a lot of work so it seems stable. I have a 30Gig drive in it and it is detected fine under Windows and Linux. On another note, my laptop does not have a burner and I cannot find good PCMCIA DOS drivers so I could use the network to backup an image of the laptop hard drive. So I started researching the only option left to me. I looked for Mass Storage USB DOS drivers. My laptop has one USB port. So, when I got it running Windows 98SE all good to go, I imaged it. Windows 98SE happened to come with the laptop. I then wiped it out and put Windows XP Professional on it. Got it all up to date and then did the same. Now, if I want to play with Linux or Unix on my laptop I should be able to wipe the drive and use the image to get back to Windows if need be. W00t!

Long week

Yes it has been a bit of a long week. All this week I was doing planning and slowly implementing a change up at work. A server there was having trouble and so I had to create a BDC(Backup Domain Controller) and then once everything worked promote it to a PDC(Primary Domain Controller). Since the original PDC was having trouble I was thinking this might not work and leave me in a big mess. Luckily it went somewhat smoothly. I still had to stay after hours but it was all good.

P.E.T.A. problems

Newsmax.com has a story about what happened to Roy of the odd show ‘Siegfried & Roy’. It is appalling that the group known as PETA can get away with some of the comments and actions they say and do. They sent a fax to Roy in the hospital blasting him for having an animal caged. It is one thing to have their views, it is quite another to shove them in a persons face that is barely alive right now. I personally DON’T think it was a good thing what happened to Roy. I do not specifically feel sorry for him as playing with wild animals is very dangerous and foolhardy but I would not want something like that to happen.

Not enough Keyboards…Or too many…

I need to dig up another keyboard. I know I have 10 or 20 of them somewhere. Well, AT style with the DIN connector types. I had to rehook the keyboard to the lackofpants.com webserver which is on my home connection tonight as the lights blinked and reset all the computers. Oh well, it is rebooted and all is well.

Laptop temptations…

I am thinking of trying to put FreeBSD on my laptop. I was doing some research and it looks like everything will work on it but the only real way to know is to try it out. I think I will try ‘FreeBSD 4.8-Release’ as it should be a bit more stable than the 5.1 versions. If I have time tonight I will do that while watching TV. Time might not be on my side though. Oh well, that is sometimes the way things go…

Bugtracking and Sourceforge

One interesting thing I have found out is the problem with the broadcast storm issue on my DMZ at home was not just because of the NIC on the firewall but also an issue with the way a script parses and shows some wrong data. I decided to throw caution into the wind and play around with FreeBSD and Apache. I have it sitting on my connection behind the DMZ of course. I was using phpSysinfo to show generic stats of the computer running FreeBSD. Well, I am using version 5.1 of FreeBSD and it was showing nothing but errors on the network side. I decided to look at the bug reports for the info program. It seems that anything newer than 4.8 of FreeBSD has some issues with that. Well, I did find the fix. Somewhere near line 47 of ‘includes/os/class.FreeBSD.inc.php’ where it runs the netstat program it needs to be changed from ‘cut -c1-24,42-‘ to ‘cut -c1-24,44-‘. To think, some of the problem was one little line. Only ONE freaking number. This is why I am not into programming as a rule. I would loose all my hair if I decided to go into that area of computers.

Merging as it were.

It seems that the bank I work for, Community State Bank, and First Community Bank are merging. The latter bank is quite a bit larger than the former. From what it seems, this might just be a good thing for most if not all.

Too much to do…not enough time…

I have noticed that my time has gotten horribly limited these past few years. Between work and a personal life, which I am glad to have both, I don’t often have time to tinker or even be lazy. Oh well, I guess it just happens and according to my Dad, builds character. heh…

Birthdays all around

Well, my father had one on the 8th of this month. My Niece had one this past Saturday on the 20th. Mine is on the 23rd. I think I have a couple of other relatives that have it during September. I will be 25 this year. Time does go by rather fast. Oh well, it happens.

Postfix/Courier and FreeBSD

It is interesting to be learning how to set up virtual domains using the aformentioned software. And on FreeBSD no less. I hope I get through this in one piece…heh. Well, The weekend is upon us and I got a wedding to go to on Saturday. No, not mine…yet. It is my girlfriend’s cousin, if I remember correctly. Time to jet. Later.

Can you say dragged out…

If you have not been watching the news recently then you might not know about the Texas 11, well now 10. I am not going long into this because it is an irritating subject but all this waste of money and time would not have been necessary if the stupid senators that skipped the state, because they did not agree with something, should be punished in some major way. If I were to ever do that because of my job, when I came back I would no longer have a job. They kept saying that they are defending freedom while preventing our system from working. Ok, time to breathe…heh. If it would pass I would make a law so if they skipped town for more than a day then they would be fired and the next in line would take over. I really don’t see it as a Democrat or Republican issue. I see it as a job issue. I think I am through for the day. Later…

Explore, repair…repair…

I know, an odd title for this entry but as I was working I was thinking of the original Transformers movie where they first crashed to Earth. Teletran-1, their computer in the Ark, kept saying that. The Ark is the ‘name’ of their ship that crashed to Earth on the first episode/movie. Anyway, I had to fix an update on a couple of computers as I forgot an update a short bit back. Oh well, It works good now. Later…

Spirit investigations

I am thinking of trying to get in touch with the people of lonestarspirits.org and see if they maybe need any help. Paranormal activity is an interest of mine and has been for a while. Anyway, time to get ready to go home. Later…

A Computer Tech’s work is never done.

Today I am going to help out a nephew of mine. He is getting a computer and I am going to help him set it up, tweak it, and maybe tighten up security on it… I might even show him how to keep Windows updated just in case another hole or vulnerability is discovered which alas, is bound to happen.
