A day off

Looks like I get a day off tomorrow for a holiday. I do wish it was a day off on Friday but Thursday can work. Speaking of working, I am hoping to dig a trench along the whole fence line in the back yard and pour concrete in it. So far our three dogs have decided to dig out at least 4 or 5 times. Everytime I patch the hole the dogs make a new one when they get bored during the day. Oh well… dogs can be a pain in the backside sometimes.

kiosking around

One of the many things on my plate is trying to get a Linux-based kiosk working for where I work. I have to get it stable then lock it down but make it still useable. I plan to use Firefox as the browser as it works rather well in Windows and Linux. I wanted to use Debian because of how easy it is to update but it is a pain to use new stuff in package format. I am trying out the distrobution named “Ubuntu”. It is based off of Debian and offers regular security updates for 18 months per release. Each release comes out every 6 months so this should be interesting.

The elections are over…

Well, this past year or so has had an interesting and somewhat dirty race for the president. I am glad that Bush won over Kerry. I am also glad that Tom Daschle is getting the boot from the Senate. It could not have happened to a nicer guy. Anyway, not much else is going on. Lates…

San Antonio abound

Over at First Community Bank we are opening up a third location in San Antonio. Right now I am using the internet connection in the hotel I am staying at. We plan to go back to Houston tomorrow afternoon but the time depends on when we finish. Anyway, I am going to watch some tv and pass out from being tired. Smoke if you got em…

Not much to say…

Well, I do not have much to say this entry except that my Grandfather died yesterday, the 24th…..

Birthday parties

This past weekend I went to a birthday party for my Great Niece, Marcie. It was at a gymnastics center kind of place. Normally I just BS with whoever is around but this party I got a chance to hit the springboard and go into a pit of cube-shaped foam type things. I found it refreshing and kind of fun. It also made me realize that I am not in as good of shape as I used to be because getting out of that pit wore me out. After catching my breath I partook in it again. The sure sign of age is when you feel it the next day. I did not feel much but I could tell I did something the day before.

I can be boring…but not always

I have noticed that when some of the people I know write blog entries they seem to have pages to say. I don’t think I have ever been able to put into words all of what I think, so mine tend to be a bit shorter if not redundant in nature. It has always been that way with me though. I remember all in grade school and even in college my writings being dry and while factually correct not always entertaining.
My abilities to keep on one subject or even stay on one point in a topic sometimes does not pan out; but hey, that is why they have rough drafts. Heh. Seriously though, I think that I need to get out more in my free time. Go to a park with my puppy. Teach her to ride in my truck. As I said in an earlier entry I need to play the guitar more. I think I remember where my teaching books are so that is a good start. One makes sense and the other is guitar tabs of ZZ Top songs for when I feel better about the quality of my playing. I don?t want to learn wimpy songs and I could not find Ozzy song tabs at the time? Gotta go. Later?

Guitars and all that rot?

You know, it has been a little while since I have brought out my guitar and attempted to learn it more. My problem is that I am left handed when it comes to playing a guitar and nobody I know, that plays, is left handed so learning how does not get easier. Maybe when I get a chance I will take a picture of it and put it on the blog. Anyway, gotta go. lates…

Columbus Day October 11th

Looks like I do not have to work today…W00t…anyway, lates.

Election and the like…

I normally stay out of the political side of things because it just brings discord and strife when brought up but I have to say that I cannot wait until this whole thing is over. I do not think that most of the people in the US of A needed the debates to see whom they will vote for. All the debates have told me is that Kerry is a smoother talker than Bush. That is something I already knew so no news there. Although it can be nice to be a really good public speaker it is not a killer decider for the vote. I honestly do not think I could vote for Kerry and still hold my head high thinking I did the right thing. While Bush does not win me over on all points, some of the important ones he does. I won’t go into details here at the moment. Anyway, that is all I have to say at 5:40 in the morning. Lates…

Authentication methods…

A question was presented to me today regarding authentication methods for Windows 2000 servers(and *nix ones) across the Internet so only one login is necessary. While I think there are a few fielded answers, finding one to implement that is secure is not necessarily easy. RADIUS was proposed but Windows 2000 I am not sure supports it. I have found it can run a server for that auth. method so when I do further research maybe it will be viable. Another possible type is LDAP. The problem with LDAP is that from what I have been looking at, you have to rig Windows a bit differently to auth. on it but might be worth a shot if done through SSL or some other secure method. Kerberos might show some promise. It looks like no easy way exists but I do not plan to give up that easily.

More on this later…maybe…

Easy to forget

It does seem easy for me to forget and update this blog. Oh well, I am doing it today. Right now I am still up at work fixing a database problem. OT here we come…heh. Anyway, I cannot wait until the weekend. I have been having trouble sleeping lately and so Saturday’s have been when I catch up on sleep. On a side note, I think I may have some ideas again to redo some of theuncle.com and maybe smock.com. I gotta get going to finish the database fix. Lates…

Dogs…

To start off with, my wife has had a Black Lab dog since before we met and when we finally got a back yard when moving into a house, the dog came along for the ride. Recently my wife and I got two puppies. Needless to say the older dog kinda was upset about all this since the puppies like to jump and bite and lick everything. Of the two puppies mine is the runt of the litter. I have been taking her for walks every so often so she can get used to it. I am glad I got a puppy. Both of the puppies are part Black Lab so they can be very silly…even for dogs. I need to spend a Saturday taking my pup in my truck so as she gets older she won’t have the urge to jump out of it. Right now she stays in front with me but I plan to get her used to the back of the pickup one day. Enough of my rambling I say. Lates

She’s ALIVE…again

I finally got my Win2k Server running again. I got a storage repository again. w00t… I still have it sitting on the bench though making sure it works fine before I hold the heavy-assed thing in the air with one arm and screw it back into the rack(yes, the case is rack-mountable). Once this one is done and put in the closet I am hoping to get to the FreeBSD box and this time get it the exact way I want to right after an install.

Bowling results

My fingers still hurt from bowling 7+ games in 3 hours. I cannot say that I did bad last night as my highest score was 135. Not too bad for not being a regular bowler and not bowling since last year.
Below are my scores not specifically in order:
135
135
121
105
106
99
96
Those are all the one’s I remember. We could have bowled more but it was a long night and my ability to remember has never been a strong suit. Anyway, lates…

Bowling….

Tonight my nephew Charlie and I are going bowling. We plan to go from about 11p to 2a or so. It will be rather fun I hope. I think I will hurt tomorrow though because we usually play the whole time without stopping.

Learning more and more…

Time has not been kind to me. I have to soon find time to get my Windows 2000 server going again and I plan to rebuild my Unix server that is running FreeBSD. I might wait until the 5.x series goes to stable if it has not already. It really depends on my mood of course. Once I get the Win2k Server back going it will be my primary file server for my wife and I. I plan to figure out a way to do monthly backups of the data on it just in case. The FreeBSD box is still running www.lackofpants.com on my home connection. Currently it is using 4.9 Release. While I may trust FreeBSD more than Windows I do know that no OS is perfect security wise so I have the BSD box behind a DMZ with only the necessary port(s) forwarded to that machine. It is totally seperated from the rest of my network as it should be.

Birthday

I know of this annual thing called a birthday and imagine that mine seems to be today…or at least that is what my parents tell me… I could have a birthday on Feb. 29 and only age every 4 years…well, it would be nice if it worked that way but it does not seem to. I am now 26, feel my wrath!!!

Yes I know…

I know it has been a while since I updated this thing. Life has gotten in the way so very much since then. I will try to update this more often but that is something I cannot promise. Anyway, just so you all know, I still work at First Community Bank in Houston. I still learn things often so it is all good… lates
