Cisco stuff

Earlier this week I took a Cisco class. It taught me how to do subnetting and the like on the first day. After that we dove into Cisco routers and learned the in’s and out’s of them. We also learned a lot about the switches and some about the PIX firewall. I am jazzed a bit from that class and hope to try and get my CCNA(Cisco Certified Network Associate) cert. soon. Anyway, later…

theuncle.com a go go

“theuncle.com” is going to be moving hosting companies in the next few days. I am hoping the downtime will be kept to a minimum but one can only hope. I know I have not been updating for a while but I have been busy with work and other endeavors. I hopefully will have enough time to throw random thoughts on this site more often. Anyway, gotta go…later.

The weekend

This past weekend was a somewhat busy one. On Sunday, 03/10/2004, my wife and I went to the rodeo. Reba was singing for that night. She was in good form and I actually enjoyed going.

UPDATE [03/26/2004]: I just noticed the mistake. I bet I was looking at the wrong month. It should have been 03/07/2004 or something like that.

Computer room

My computer room is almost finished. It has been a lot of work but I can actually walk in the room now. Once it is totally done I will be able to do work in there. Anyway, gotta go…lates…

Cisco were art thou…

I know I have not updated in a while but life has in fact kept me busy. Tomorrow I will be finishing my move from my old apartment to the one my wife and I live in now. My computer room is still a mess because I have not had the time to clean it up. Today as the title suggests I have been playing with a Cisco product. The Cisco 1721 Router to be exact. I think I am getting rather decent at configuring it. As of this writing I have almost figured out how to upload a different binary IOS version that supports more than just TCP/IP. Anyway, time for me to get back to it for now…later.

Honeymoon and more…

Well, that was a fun week of being on a Honeymoon. Nicki and I went to San Antonio for the whole week. We did all sorts of things and have pictures to boot. I am still sifting through most of the pictures that are of a digital nature but some are up right now. If you go to http://wedding.smock.com/honeymoon/ you will see them seperated by days. Back to the wedding, for some reason I had no problems standing in front of a crowd of people and saying the vowes. The wedding went off great and I am happy to be with her of course. The ring takes a little getting used to as I never wore a ring before for any length of time. Anyway, remember to join me for my next entry, same bat time, same bat station.

Less than two days…

Less than two days until I get married. I have always hated standing in front of people. Now I will have to do so and say my vows in front of some people. I seem to be one to go against my nature a bit more recently but that, I guess, is love…sometimes. It’s all good. And if my wife to be reads this. I love you babes. If anyone else reads this then don’t get the wrong idea. I am not henpecked…and never will be. I am my own man. I rock. There, I feel better now. You best watch out. Don’t make me come over there. Now I am rambling. Anyway, later…

Not too long to wait.

It seems that less than a week until I get married. It will be a good thing. On another note, I have been busy due to the aforementioned topic and other stuff. I still have to move ASAP after the wedding and honeymoon. There is never enough time in the day. lates…

The New Year

The New Year’s Eve thing was cool. My nephew and I shot off some fireworks. Toward the end we did a stupid thing and held onto the launchers for the artillery shells. Charlie was able to hold onto it somewhat ok… I on the other hand was more worried about holding too tight and restricting the ability of the shell to expel from the canister and in turn hurting my hand. I have to use a keyboard every day at work so I did not hold onto it too tight. That was a bad thing. The shell came out but the canister also came out of my hand. That spooked me a bit. We did it a couple more times and each time I was unable to hold onto it because of my fear of loosing a hand. I have become attached to it as you may have guessed. The last time I did it I held my pinky finger behind the plastic base of the canister to hopefully re-enforce my grip. That did not work and the plastic base broke under the force of the explosion and the strength of my finger. I was surprised that I did not have to re-set the finger or anything. It did not even hurt. Oh well, later for now…

Wedding is coming up

It is coming up soon. I am ready to get it over with and go on to the honeymoon…w00t!

Merry Christmas

I wish all that see this, and those who don’t, a Merry Christmas.

Handel’s Messiah

Nicki and I went to the Houston Symphony and listened to Handel’s Messiah. I really enjoyed it. Nicki did not enjoy it like she did the Ballet. I rather enjoy listening to Classical music and the like. It was nice to hear the Christmas carols and other songs done the way HM did it. Anyway, dinner is ready. I gotta go.

The Nutcracker Ballet

On the 14th of December we went to see the Nutcracker. I cannot say I enjoyed the whole thing but the first part was ok. I think the reason I did not like the second part was that the whole thing was centered around entertaining the main character which was dreaming all this. That got boring fast. The first part had all the family and friends opening gifts and having fun which made it easy to watch. Overall I could handle seeing it again but will not go out of my way to see it.

Stupid ACLU

I have a few problems with the ACLU. In case you did not know ACLU means ‘American Civil Liberties Union’. What a name for an origanization that promotes abortions. Not only do they accept abortions as a right instead of murder on American children but they flaunt that fact. They of course spin it in a way that makes it look like a ‘choice’. With people like Tim Robbins and Martin Sheen in their group I can see where their political leanings go. If they were politically indifferent then I could maybe tolerate them. As you might have guessed from this specific entry, I happen to be closer to a conservative than a moderate or liberal. You may also know that I am not that good at putting my thoughts into writing but at least a basic point is in the mess that is my writings. Ok, time for me to take a deep breath and step away from the keyboard. Until next time, lates…

Affirmative Action or lack thereof…

I don’t normally state my thoughts on anything political, as people tend to enjoy sending hate mail if they disagree. I do however have to applaud the president of Texas A&M University for holding his ground and not allowing race to enter the equation when it comes to admissions. It should be based on merit. Affirmative Action is a horrible and racist viewpoint. A lot of what the US of A was based on was people succeeding on their merit and not the color of skin. Ok, I am getting off my soapbox for now…

Engaged Encounters

This coming weekend Nicki and I are going to a get-together called Engaged Encounters. It is a Catholic thing for couples getting married in a Catholic Church. Since I am Roman Catholic and we will be getting married at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Houston, TX we have to go to the EE for a weekend. Well, the day is getting closer and I will be married. I never guessed I would but weirder things have happened in this crazy world. Anyway, later…

No time for fun…usually

Well, fun for me is usually working and toying with computers. Sometimes I bring out my left-handed guitar and pretend like I am good at playing it. I do have the natural talent for computers but none for anything musical. In other words, you would not want to be in the same room when I try to play the guitar or any other instrument. Anyway, later….

IT LIVES!!!

Kramer was revived and is working again. I do not, as of yet, have Active Directory enabled on it but it is working fine as a local file server again. Now, my main system can back itself up to somewhere again. I am working on a computer right now that I am thinking of calling “Beast”. It might end up storing all the extra hard drives that are of any decent size, become the file server, and Active Directory Controller. Kramer I think will become a mail server for lackofpants.com. I plan to leave the two 20gig hard drives in it. Well, I gotta get back to what I was working on. Later…

Kramer problems

Yeah, I know it has been a few days or more since I last updated but being busy or tired tends to take up my time right now. Yesterday I was off of work because the banks were closed. Gotta love those bank holidays. Kramer, which is my Win2k Server, decided to die. I had the main drive mirrored. It somewhat worked but it did not allow me to boot right back up. The two mirrored drives were fine physically but the boot files got messed up slightly when the 40gig drive that I have just sitting for a temp store for all of the other computers, crashed. I have been meaning to reinstall Windows on that computer anyway so it gave me a reason to do so. I finally got it going good last night. It is not mirrored yet but I really do not want to mirror using the stupid Promise controller because that had something to do with the problem on this last ‘issue’. I might move the second drive to the secondary onboard controller for speed issues and do a software raid for right now. Well, that is it for now. Later…

An Apple Mac with a life to live.

This past Sunday I got an Apple Macintosh G3 Tower from my father. He got it somewhere free and did not want it so I got to take it and ponder on the madness that is Apple Corp. While the processor is not that high on the Megahertz arena the operating system came up pretty quickly. It was also a relatively recent version of MacOS being version 8.5. I have a Mac monitor, keyboard, and mouse so I hooked it up and the thing came to life. It seemed to work for a while then all of a sudden the system would freeze up. After a few times of that the hard drive gave up the ghost and I was left with a system that had everything going for it but the main drive. I plan on replacing it soon and the computer can handle up to 384Megs of RAM which I plan to exploit. As I am waiting to get a hold of MacOS 8.x, 9.x, or 10.x I might just install the PowerPC version of Linux and also try my hand at one of the BSD Unixes. Anyway, enough of my rambling. Although, the fact that I have a Weblog means I do have enough time to ramble. Later…
